He made an appearance on Howard Stern talking about what a bad job Chow Yun-Fat did in The Replacement Killers. If you want to hear what he said, then here's the link. This was taken from W. Louis' CYF: God of Actors Page.
Now as anyone knows, QT has basically ripped off his ideas from Hong Kong flicks. Hmmm...think of "Reservoir Dogs". QT may as well have just translated the last part of "City on Fire". Remember how they dressed? It's a direct rip-off from "A Better Tomorrow II" where CYF and the other protagonists wore the black suits, black ties, white shirt, etc. Although "City on Fire" was directed by Ringo Lam (thanx to alt.asian-movies for pointing that out), you can see the rip-off plain and clear. And I seem to recall a reference to "The Killer" in Jackie Brown, where he incorrectly identified the Killer's gun.
The following quote was taken
from "The Films
of John Woo and the Art of Heroic Bloodshed" (the comments in parentheses
are there to clarify): "After seeing ABT (A Better Tomorrow), future director
Quentin Tarantino rushed out to buy a coat to emulate his new-found role
model (Chow Yun-Fat)."
This little snippet was taken from "The Movie Shelf's Sonny Chiba Page"
Once he came down to insulting one of the nicest people I've ever met in my life (Chow Yun-Fat) and saying that he "ruined" The Replacement Killers, I couldn't overlook that. Then he went even further to say that CYF had better learn to speak English. Well, I've seen TRK, and it seems to me that CYF WAS speaking English. Pretty damn good English considering it isn't his first, second, or even third language! And also you have to say, "hmm, John Lee (CYF's character) was from China, so wouldn't it be normal to expect some kind of foreign accent?"
QT went beyond professional criticism when it came to CYF's performance, in fact, he got pretty personal when talking about Fat-Gor when he brought up that "if you're going to make an AMERICAN movie with an actress as good as Mira, you'd better learn some fucking English" implying that maybe Chow Yun-Fat was an inferior actor. Wonder if QT knows that even though Mira is an Academy Award winning actress, CYF is an award winning actor as well.
Maybe it's a shortcoming of
mine, but I don't see how a bad actor can say such a thing about one of
the greatest actors today. So in my opinion, it's stupid of him to
be cutting anyone down based on acting merit. He is the worst P.O.S.
actor I've ever seen in my life! It seems that he only gets into
his own films or his friends' movies. He would never make it based
on his acting ability, of which he has none.
